IN CLASS

ANNOUNCE: Visiting Speakers for the semester: Effie Rieper, from trans-genred digital-dissident outsider artist to Creative Technologistโ€“ and back again Regine Gilbert, Designing for Accessibility

DRAWING WARM-UP All virtual markers to the white board on zoom. Draw whatever comes to mind...

OWS: You will work in class today with your teams! Polish your Iteration 01 of your annotated bibliography, moodboard, storyboard. Prepare it for presentation on Wed.

PRESENTATIONS GUIDELINES : "Art, in itself, is an attempt to bring order out of chaos.โ€ Stephen Sondheim

  • 6 Groups (7 minutes presentation, 7 minute Critique) Student groups to be posted.

  1. When you are preparing your presentation, decide who will present each part: the intro, the draft of your annotated bibliography, the team mood board and the storyboard.

  2. Begin with your names (I know you all know each other but pretend this is an audience of strangers). As part of your introduction prepare a 1-3 sentence description of your project (the ). This should not be longer than 2 minutes. In your pitch explain to the audience what you collectively find most fascinating or inspiring about the person youโ€™re producing a documentary on; how you relate to this person. You can do this with an or metaphor that serves as the frame for the description of your film. Your description should address your themes and goals, and an intriguing is a great way to keep the attention of your audience.

  3. Next youโ€™ll present youโ€™re supporting materials, annotated bibliography, mood board and storyboard, hybrid animatic. Have this all organized in Google slides or another presentation platform of your choosing. Please time this part of your presentation according to how long it takes to show each component within a seven minute window (minus your introduction and any conclusion you have prepared).

  4. NO APOLOGIZING for any aspect of your presentation. If something is not quite right, DO NOT let your audience know. If something isnโ€™t working correctly skip it (if possible). Speak with confidence and conviction about the project you are presenting. Pretend this is โ€œreal worldโ€ in the sense that youโ€™re out of school and trying to get funding for a project, and you need to convince your audience to believe you know what youโ€™re doing and that your project is worthwhile.

  5. The Critique should include โ€œconstructive criticism.โ€ (Constructive criticism is the process of offering valid and well-reasoned opinions about the work of others, usually involving both positive and negative comments, in a friendly manner rather than an oppositional one. The purpose of constructive criticism is to improve the outcome). You are doing each other a great service in discussing the works critically! Read below for specific rules for this critique.

Rules for the Critique:

As the person giving feedback

  1. It's Not About You (reflect generously and constructively on the work being presented)

  2. Maintain Respect and Honesty

  3. Avoid Meaningless Words and Phrases (you each get ONE "interesting" or "cool". I'll be applying these rules to myself as well:)

  4. Comparisons Should be Used Sparingly (don't make the crit a way of showing what you know, only use comparisons to other projects when they are applicable)

  5. Be Specific (vague suggestions "like, why don't you use purple instead of green" are not helpful. If you are talking about palette, is it based on color theory, for example here's an article on )

  6. Try to Speak to the Design/Creative Approach and Context

  7. Ask Why (why has this team made certain choices in storyline, typography, etc)

  8. Offer Suggestions (see #5, be specific)

  9. Consider the Audience (is the current iteration of the project doing enough to reach its intended audience?)

  10. Be Positive (particularly this early in the iterative process, negativity will not help a team move forward. If you do have concerns about the direction a team is going in, by all means share, but in a positive attitude, with specific examples, as to how they can reframe or reorganize their approach)

Kyle Cooper - Gian, Jack, Julia Sam Levinson - Dominique, Hosanna, Leo Amy Winehouse - Ed, Jaynaba, Thomas Hayao Miyazaki - Franklin, Rachel, Tracy Stephen King - Annie, Christian, Kristin Tim Burton - Pamela, Roger, Semaab
