MACRO PROJECT PHASE 02 β For this Phase of the project you are going to create a schedule and get more specific about the audience you are targeting with this experience. Youβre also going to map out your virtual environment in a physical space (if possible).
Determine a schedule β Within the 8 weeks you have left to produce this project, create a calendar that includes tasks and milestones.
Tasks can include producing all the materials for your 3D assets, organizing all the sound files you want to use, the scripting for interactions that is required, etcβ¦
Milestones should be major events in the project, the first build and test on a target VR platform, the first playtest with a classmate, friend or professor. *You should set one milestone for Week 06 when you pitch your project to the professor. Another milestone should be Week 08 when you present the Alpha version of the project to the class. A final milestone is on Week 14 when you present the Beta version to the class and visitors. Set your own personal milestones within that framework.
Begin to think about who your target audience is. Who ultimately would you like to experience your VR work? An individual who has a VR device in their office or studio? An institution, such as a school, gallery, museum, non-profit or arcade? Consider:
Individuals usually expect a long play through or a lot of re-playability.
Institutions usually prefer a short-condensed experience with a lot of excitement packed into a minimal amount of time. This is because visitors probably wonβt be able to spend a lot of time in the experience or be able to revisit it often. Your experience should get to the point more quickly. There will be lines for an experience at an institution, so a lengthy experience results in longer lines and frustrated visitors.
What are the conditions, if you can control, for a visitor to interact with your experience? (please take into account current COVID-19 restrictions)
A private space with no one else around?
A social VR experience open to all via a web browser?
A public area where only one visitor at a time is experiencing the VR, but others are in the space and can view their experience via projection?
Will you be including additional physical installation objects/physical computing components as part of the experience?
Layout your virtual space in a physical space. Try to clear out a space that is 7ft x 7ft if possible.
Find a partner (again, if possible).
Give them sticky notes and a pen.
Stand in the middle of the space with your eyes closed.
Imagine the space.
Point out objects.
Your partner (or you, if necessary) places sticky notes on the areas of the floor where you have pointed.
Analyze the space with the sticky notes laid out.
Document this exercise thoroughly.
Continue to build and accumulate assets:
2D Images
3D scans of physical world objects
3D models
Audio files
C# Scripts
Videos
Motion Capture
Color Swatches
Typography
Particles and FX Examples
In the Macro Project section of your process blog, Post: 1. Schedule, 2. A description of your target audience, 3. Desired conditions for the visitor to experience your work, 4. Documentation or your physical world mapping of your virtual space
