**THE BASICS OF COMEDY WRITING FOR STAND-UP** - Valerie Nies- Workshop (all 3 hours)&#x20;

In this one-night class, Valerie Nies will pare down comedy writing techniques she teaches more extensively in her online 5-week writing class. Participants will learn the basics of building a comedy set, including joke writing techniques and development of comedic persona and POV, and learn a few pitfalls to avoid when performing.

**Beginning** [midterm-project](https://carla-gannis.gitbook.io/humor-makes-us-better-storytellers/midterm-project "mention") "Misdirection"**:** One joke writing technique Valerie will go over thoroughly is misdirection (or surprise). For your Midterm, students will present examples of misdirection jokes they wrote, incorporating visual art and technology in their presentation.
