ABOUT DIGITAL ARREST: Digital Arrest is a virtual reality experience based on a true story that allows users to embody Jarrell Daniels, a young black man whose social media life fueled conspiracy charges leading to a six-year prison sentence in a New York prison. Digital Arrest explores how social media can be used as a tool for policing in the 21st century.
ARTIST BIOS: Leah Roh () is a Brooklyn-based visual artist. She was born in Los Angeles and raised on the stories of her family immigrating and acclimating to America from South Korea. Her grandmother was married at the age of 13 to escape Japanese enslavement of single Korean women and independently raised a family of 8 children. Leah decided to pursue filmmaking for her bachelor's degree from Boston University to learn how to authentically document these types of essential experiences from her family and narratives from the underrepresented. After moving to New York, she started to experiment with different storytelling mediums to provide platforms for marginalized voices to share their truth. She received her masters in digital arts to further explore the critical ways emerging technology can be utilized for experiential storytelling. As a resident at New Museum's incubator for art and technology, NEWINC, she started her own experiential studio, Motherlode Lab, developing interactive installations that center on equality and education. She teaches experiential art and design at Pratt Institute and NYU and her current work focuses on negotiating with the boundaries between virtual & physical spaces to explore the human condition, experimenting with creative technologies to examine the relationship between user interaction and alternate realities.
