Notebook or Sketchbook

Fall 2019 • Carla Gannis • Mondays and Wednesdays • 4:30 – 6:20pm • 370J Rm 312

"Regardless what technology is, I like analog too." - Lou Gramm

"tfw you write a header longhand on notebook paper and then try to do a copy/paste for the next sheet 🙄" - Carla Gannis

OLD SCHOOL :: ANALOG Option 01: PURCHASE (or USE an existing) blank notebook or sketchbook.

Option 02: CHOOSE a published book as your notebook/sketchbook that you alter through redaction, collage and remix. Make sure you choose a notebook or sketchbook that is small enough that it's easy to take it with you wherever you go—pocket-sized or slightly larger is usually best. Carry this notebook with you at all times, along with something to write with and a glue stick or tape. Use it often—several times a day. Depending on your note or sketchbook's size, you might even fill it up over the course of this semester.

SEMESTER LONG ASSIGNMENT: COLLECT *stuff.* This can include ideas, questions, speculations, stories, jokes, memes, loves, hates, political rants, "written hyperlinks," dreams, etc. You can express your points of view on the aforementioned through words, imprints, collages, rubbings, stains, paint, markers, white out, printed photographs, stickers, drawings, visual and textual scraps, and anything else your professor hasn't been creative enough to come up with.

DOCUMENT your analog notebook *weekly* on your process blog. This will be checked by your professor each week, so just take a quick picture with your smartphone of your note/sketchbook & post it to your blog before each class on Wednesday.
